Catalog Subject Areas for Study Abroad

Note: if you are a faculty member or a student and want to search for books related to the experience of study abroad or other cultures, it is recommended you use our library catalog. I provide a link to the catalog on this page. The terms listed below have been indexed using subject search terms - under each subject topic you will find some relevant books that may enrich your Study Abroad experience and understanding of other cultures.

Students - Guidebooks to Countries

How do I find out cool things about a country before I travel abroad?

The library has many useful books you can consult to get some basic information on a country you will be visiting, including exciting landmarks to see, places to eat, etc.

To find some guidebooks for a particular country, enter the Books tab on the main library website. Then click on Libraries Catalog. Click the dropdown limiter for Subject and then enter terms such as England--Guidebooks  in the search box. Here is a typical result set

In general, guides by Rick Steves, Lonely Planet, Fodor's, or Frommer's are fun and very useful to read, and some contain maps, etc.

Access to Books While Overseas

NOTE: While overseas, you will have access to TAMU Libraries extensive collection of books, although print books will not be available. However, you are allowed to request chapters from books or theses/dissertations through the Get it For Me service; they will scan the relevant portions and deliver the item as a pdf file through your email. You can not request a scan of more than 50 pages from an item.

You can search for books using either the EBSCOhost Discovery Service master database or through the main library catalog called Libraries Catalog. To limit your search to just eBooks while in the catalog, use the Available Online link under the section Browse by Library Locations.  If in EBSCOhost Discovery Service, limit to eBooks from the main search page by clicking Available Online under the Library Location limiter, which can be found under the Limit your Results part of the search page.

Also, for questions about what you can download from different eBook vendors and what software may be required, please consult the Help link in each eBook vendor, which is usually located on the top right of the vendor's eBook database page. To see a list of our eBook vendors and collections, you may browse them in this list.

If we do not carry a book, you can use Get it For Me to request scans of chapters, but you might also utilize WorldCat, a global library catalog that will provide information on possible library locations in your host country that might carry the item you seek.
