The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) was established in 1987 to ensure that general election debates among the leading candidates for the offices of President and Vice President of the United States are a permanent part of the electoral process. To meet its ongoing goal of educating voters, CPD activities include producing and sponsoring the presidential debates, preparing educational materials, and conducting research to improve the quality of debates.
