Systematic Reviews and Related Evidence Syntheses

Protocol Registers

What is a Protocol?

  • Systematic reviews should be registered at the protocol stage to help avoid unplanned duplication and to enable comparison of reported review methods with what was planned in the protocol.
  • A protocol describes the rationale, hypothesis, and planned methods of the systematic review. Detailed protocols should be made publicly available and registered (maintained as a permanent record) in a registry such as PROSPERO.
