Understanding Historical Research Sources

The following graphic can assist you in conceptualizing the difference between types of sources and the importance of primary sources in research. For the purposes of your film analysis class, a primary source might include the film itself, or other materials created contemporaneously (created around the same time) as the film. Examples might be reviews, promotional materials, and interviews with individuals involved in the film's creation. Under the "Journal Articles" tab you will find secondary sources which include the analysis of films created by scholars and authors. Additional Resources are comprised of tertiary materials such as encyclopedias, glossaries, film statistics, etc.
