A note on newspapers as primary historical sources:
Depending on the context of research, newspapers may be considered a primary or a secondary source. If you are researching a current scientific breakthrough, for example, a newspaper article would not offer any raw data or first-hand accounts of the topic, and could therefore not be considered a primary source. However, when conducting historical research, newspapers are acceptable as primary sources. Even if the journalist who originally wrote the historic news article was note a first-hand witness to a particular historical event, the contemporaneous authoring and publication renders a news article a primary source.
Historians and professors may have different guidance on the appropriate use of newspapers as primary sources. When in doubt, consult with your instructor or a librarian.
