Science Fiction and Fantasy Research

This guide is intended to provide examples of different resources available for the study of science fiction and fantasy literature. By no means comprehensive, it is meant to inform and inspire a variety of research projects within the genre.

Industry Awards

There are numerous awards presented in science fiction and fantasy. The first resource below - the Science Fiction Awards Database - is an excellent resource for finding information about genre awards.

 

Science Fiction Awards Database

  • One-stop shopping for links to award winners for all the major science fiction and fantasy awards.

Bram Stoker Awards

  • "The Bram Stoker Awards are the horror equivalent of the Nebulas, voted by members of the professional Horror Writer's Association. They are notable for being awarded "for superior achievement" — not for "best" of the year."

Hugo Awards 

  • “The Hugo Awards, first presented in 1953 and presented annually since 1955, are science fiction’s most prestigious award. The Hugo Awards are voted on by members of the World Science Fiction Convention (“Worldcon”), which is also responsible for administering them.”

Nebula Awards 

  • “The Nebula Awards® are voted on, and presented by, full members of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc. Founded as the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1965 by Damon Knight, the organization began with a charter membership of 78 writers; it now has over 1,500 members, among them many of the leading writers of science fiction and fantasy.”

Philip K. Dick Award

  • "The Philip K. Dick Award is presented annually with the support of the Philip K. Dick Trust for distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the United States. The award is sponsored by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society and the award ceremony is sponsored by the NorthWest Science Fiction Society."
