Science Fiction and Fantasy Research

This guide is intended to provide examples of different resources available for the study of science fiction and fantasy literature. By no means comprehensive, it is meant to inform and inspire a variety of research projects within the genre.

Writer's Resources

ASFA: The Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists

  • “The Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (ASFA) was founded to promote artists who work in the field of science fiction and fantasy art. It was organized for artistic, literary, educational and charitable purposes concerning the visual arts of Science Fiction, Fantasy Mythology and related topics. ASFA’s purpose is to encourage and help artists, support the needs of working artists, educate the public, connect and encourage patrons of the arts and others who are interested in works of the genre.”

Broad Universe

  • “An international organization of writers, editors, librarians, readers and reviewers whose mission is to celebrate and promote women and alternately gendered persons writing in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and horror.”

Heinlein Society

  • “The Heinlein Society exists to preserve the legacy renowned writer Robert Anson Heinlein left us in novels, essays, speeches, and short stories that remain as fresh as ever. We need your help to do it. We intend in Heinlein’s words to “PAY IT FORWARD,” since we can never pay back the benefits we got from him, by spreading the wisdom of Robert Anson Heinlein to others.”

Horror Writers Association (HWA)

  • “THE HORROR WRITERS ASSOCIATION (HWA) is a nonprofit organization of writers and publishing professionals around the world, dedicated to promoting dark literature and the interests of those who write it.”

Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA)

  • “Founded in 1965, SFWA is an organization for published authors and industry professionals in the fields of science fiction, fantasy, and related genres.”

Science Fiction & Fantasy Poetry Association (SFPA)

  • “The Science Fiction & Fantasy Poetry Association was founded as the Science Fiction Poetry Association in 1978 to bring together poets and readers interested in speculative poetry. Members voted to rename the organization in 2017. What is sf/f poetry? Everybody has a unique definition. To be sure, it is poetry (we'll leave that definition to you), but it’s poetry with some element of speculation in the narrow sense—usually science fiction, fantasy, or horror, though some include straight science.”
